Program note

Première: 15 september 1995 - Muziekcentrum Vredenburg, Utrecht by Kees Wieringa

The Latin title of the work means: The same but different. It is a chain of sections (musical objects) that, because these are repeated, aim at a certain independence in relation to the whole. The complement of opposites is, also in this piece, the reflection of the contrast that is anchored in the structure of the tonality. This contrast is about cause and result, tension and relaxation, pairs of functions that in their turn are anchored in the basic layers of the human psyche. This is a perspective that has consequences for the understanding of time and duration and takes away the limits of the concepts of ‘beginning’ and ‘ending’, ‘before’ and ‘after’.
